This is Nithiya.
She is five years old, but like most Indian children I met, looks significantly younger due to malnutrition. She has the physical appearance of a two- or three-year-old and a heart twice her size. We bonded instantly. Wherever I went, Nithiya was never far behind, and this smile is what I saw every time I looked at her.
Nithiya has not learned English yet, so there was little spoken communication — just her miniature hand in mine and hundreds of smiles as bright as the sunshine in Bangalore.
But you don’t have to speak the same language or be any bigger than Nithiya to teach someone more than they’ve ever known about love. Love in Tamil is the same as love in English.
Except a whole lot simpler.
